TWO HARD GATES, BOTH REQUIRED: 'The key applicant must be a co-founder of a UBC spin-off company' AND 'the venture team must have completed Innovation UBC's Venture Founder program'not funded — network & mentorship

North Forge Founders Program
Science-based, technology-enabled and advanced manufacturing startups — includes health hardware and devices
Funding: No direct cheque — their FAQ is explicit: 'While North Forge doesn't provide direct investment, we connect startups with funding opportunities through our North Forge Angel Network, investor readiness training, and curated introductions to private and public funding sources.' Acceptance is the only route into the NF Angel Network and into AMLab.
Cost: Free to apply AND free to participate — all four stages are at no cost · Cohorts: Four cohorts a year · the next one starts January 2027
Applications: APPLY BEFORE 2 NOVEMBER 2026 for the January 2027 cohort. (The August 10 deadline for the September 2026 cohort has passed.)
Format: Four stages — Pathfinder (validate the idea) · Base Camp (product-market fit) · Ascent (MVP and go-to-market) · North Star (scaling toward Series A). Pathfinder and Base Camp run on Zoom, about two hours a week, so you do not have to be in Winnipeg
CONFIRMED OPEN NATIONALLY — their FAQ states: 'Anyone with an innovative idea or business in tech, advanced manufacturing, or STEM can apply to join our programs, regardless of stage or background.' No geographic restriction anywhere on the site, and the four stages are delivered online. Manitoba not-for-profit, but you do not need to be in Manitoba.not funded — network & mentorship
The reason to care is the angel network on the far side of it: the NF Angel Network is open only to founders who are part of this programme, and it reportedly drew interest from 1,500 investors within three months of launching. North Forge is an award-winning not-for-profit and also runs ElevateIP for intellectual property protection and the Women in Innovation Lab (WiLab). Mentorship applications run alongside founder applications.
💲 North Forge Maker Request (FabLab)
Any physical prototype — device housings, jigs, fixtures, enclosures, mechanisms
Funding: Not funding — a paid build service, and the only North Forge resource with NO membership or programme requirement
Cost: Paid per project; quoted after they contact you · Cohorts: Rolling — submit any time
Applications: Rolling — no deadline
Format: Per project · you submit a request, an expert maker contacts you to scope it
OPEN TO ANYONE, ANYWHERE IN CANADA — 'you can hire our skilled members to bring your ideas to life, EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT A MEMBER'💲 funded
The one North Forge resource with no gate: no cohort, no membership, no Manitoba address. You hire their makers to build using $4M of equipment — metalworking, woodworking, 3D printing, laser engraving. The request form asks which of four you need (prototype, custom one-off, custom production run, or other) and whether you have a design file, one that needs work, or nothing but an idea — so a founder with a concept and no CAD can still start. The route in for device founders outside Winnipeg.

Submission is a founder-led investor memo, a four-minute video pitch with slides, and a full deck.

Volta (Halifax) — AI Residency
AI-first software. In Volta's words, 'health-adjacent, wellness, fitness, or food products can qualify when they are not regulated that way' — the bar is 'not regulated life sciences', so therapeutics, devices and diagnostics do not qualify
